You're tired in a way that doesn't match what you did today. On paper it wasn't that much. But you're carrying something no one can see — the running list of everything that needs remembering, planning, tracking, and anticipating. The appointments, the groceries, the who-needs-what-when, the mental tabs that never close.
That's mental load, and it's exhausting precisely because it's invisible — even to you.
What mental load actually is
It's not the tasks themselves. It's the thinking about the tasks: noticing what needs doing, remembering it, planning when and how, and carrying it all until it's done. It runs in the background every waking hour. You can be sitting still and still be working, because the list never stops scrolling in your head.
Why it's so draining and so unseen
Mental load doesn't look like anything from the outside. No one sees you holding the whole logistical map of a life in your mind. So when you say you're tired, it can feel like you have no right to be — you didn't "do" that much. But carrying everything in your head is doing a lot. It's just invisible labor, and invisible labor is the most exhausting kind, because it never clocks out and never gets credit.
How to put some of it down
- Get the tabs out of your head. Onto paper, a list, a shared note — anywhere but your mind. Held thoughts multiply; written ones rest.
- Share the load where you can. Mental load can be handed off, not just tasks but the remembering of them.
- Let some things be "good enough." Not every tab needs your full attention. Some can close half-done.
- Name the tiredness as real. "I'm carrying a lot, even if no one can see it." You're allowed to be tired from the invisible work.
One of the simplest reliefs is moving the load out of your head and into the open, where it stops looping. Sera can be a place to do that — to empty the mental tabs out loud, name what you're carrying, and feel a little lighter, instead of holding the whole map alone in the dark.
Sera is supportive company, not a clinician. If the weight has you burnt out or running on empty, a professional can help you find what can be set down for good.
