Before the call, the meeting, the hard talk — you've already had it a dozen times in your head. You've scripted your lines, imagined their replies, planned for every way it could go sideways. By the time it actually happens, you're exhausted, and it rarely goes the way you rehearsed anyway.
Pre-playing conversations is the forward-facing twin of replaying them afterward. Both are your mind trying to manage fear with control.
Why your brain rehearses
Rehearsing feels like preparation. If you can predict the conversation, maybe you can avoid saying the wrong thing, being caught off guard, or being judged. For an anxious mind, control feels like safety. The catch: real conversations are live and unscriptable, so the rehearsal rarely matches — and you've spent all that energy bracing for a version that won't happen.
What it costs
You live the stressful conversation twice (or twelve times) instead of once. You arrive already drained. And sometimes the rehearsal makes you more stiff, because you're trying to follow a script instead of actually being present with the person in front of you.
How to put the script down
- Notice when you've started rehearsing. "I'm scripting again." Awareness interrupts the autopilot.
- Prepare the gist, not the lines. Know roughly what you want to say. Trust yourself to find the words live.
- Remind yourself you can respond in real time. You don't need every reply pre-planned. You're allowed to think on your feet.
- Get the anxiety out before the conversation. Naming the fear underneath the rehearsal calms it more than perfecting the script.
The rehearsal loop runs hardest in silence, in your own head. Saying the worry out loud — "I'm anxious about this conversation and I keep scripting it" — takes the pressure out of the performance. Sera can be a place to do that beforehand: to set down the fear so you can walk in as yourself, not as someone reading from a script.
Sera is supportive company, not therapy. If anxiety before everyday interactions is constant, a therapist can offer tools that genuinely lighten it.
