Somewhere along the way, even rest got a syllabus. Now you're supposed to be healing — journaling your triggers, doing the shadow work, regulating your nervous system, growing, processing, becoming your "highest self." And if you're not visibly working on yourself, a small voice says you're falling behind on that too.
When healing becomes a performance, it stops healing anything. Here's permission to put the syllabus down.
When wellness becomes pressure
The wellness world can quietly send the message that you're a project to be optimized — always one practice away from finally being okay. For people who already feel not-enough, that's a perfect trap: you turn your own healing into another to-do list you're failing. The journaling becomes homework. The growth becomes a chore. The peace never arrives, because there's always more "work" to do.
Why it backfires
You can't relentlessly strive your way to peace. The striving is the opposite of the rest your system actually needs. And measuring your healing — am I better yet? am I doing it right? — keeps you stuck in self-surveillance instead of self-compassion.
A gentler relationship with growth
- Let healing be unglamorous and slow. It doesn't have to look like anything. Some days "I got through it" is the whole practice.
- Drop the practices that became pressure. If journaling feels like an exam, you're allowed to stop.
- You're not a project. You're a person. You don't need to be fixed to be worthy of rest.
- Let some days just be days. Not every moment has to be growth.
You're allowed to not be working on yourself right now. You're allowed to just live, tired and unoptimized and fine. Sera isn't another practice to keep up or a streak to maintain — it's somewhere to just talk, with no curriculum, no progress to measure, no version of you to become.
Sera is companionship, not treatment. If you're doing deeper healing work, a therapist is the right partner for it — Sera sits alongside that, never in place of it.
